Riddle or puzzle
Tailored Riddles allows you to build a game around the player, making his life, experiences, interests etc. a crucial part of the game, whether as clues or solutions. We have decided to use the name “Tailored Riddles” as we do believe that the games we provide you with are actually riddles. Though, some people might call them puzzles. So, which is it?
When in doubt – check Wikipedia
If we use Wikipedia as a fairly reliable source of data, then a riddle is defined:
“A riddle is a statement or question or phrase having a double or veiled meaning, put forth as a puzzle to be solved. Riddles are of two types: enigmas, which are problems generally expressed in metaphorical or allegorical language that require ingenuity and careful thinking for their solution, and conundra, which are questions relying for their effects on punning in either the question or the answer.”
On the other hand, Wikipedia defines a puzzle as:
“A puzzle is a game, problem, or toy that tests a person’s ingenuity or knowledge. In a puzzle, one is required to put pieces together in a logical way, in order to arrive at the correct solution of the puzzle. There are different types of puzzles for different ages, such as crossword puzzles, word-search puzzles, number puzzles, or logic puzzles.
Puzzles are often devised as a form of entertainment but they can also arise from serious mathematical or logistical problems. In such cases, their solution may be a significant contribution to mathematical research.
Solutions of puzzles often require the recognition of patterns and the creation of a particular kind of order. Sometimes not because of how complicated and diagonal the pattern can get. People with a high level of inductive reasoning aptitude may be better at solving such puzzles than others. But puzzles based upon inquiry and discovery may be solved more easily by those with good deduction skills. Deductive reasoning improves with practice.”
Checking these definitions it is possible that Tailored Riddles riddles would fall into the “puzzle” category rather than riddles. If you’re not sure about this, please check this video on how to play – it will show you that, by these definitions, it is more a puzzle than a riddle.
There, of course, is a “but” here! If you google the web for various similar products, you will find that they classify themselves as “online riddles”.
Our favourite two are:
notpr0n was a great source of inspiration to us, and will definitely get an article about it at one point on this blog. It is definitely the most fun thing on the internet out there. They characterize themselves as “The hardest riddle available on the internet!”
#2 Overture Facile
Overture Facile is also cool, though we do recommend notpr0n as more interesting. However, it also has interesting concepts and levels and will keep you occupied for days. They define themselves as “…a riddle game with a growing difficulty.”
So, even though by Wikipedia’s definition these should technically be puzzles, the term “online riddle game” is very commonly used.
So – riddle or puzzle?
We decided to call them riddles. Some will call them puzzles. Some will call them brain teasers. Some will call them various names (probably with words not really suited for an article like this) when they spend hours trying to solve them. In the end – does it really matter what they’re called? What it matters is that they provide tons of fun!
